JHST welcomes rigorous work that connects human biology, measurement, and technology—and makes every claim answerable to evidence.
Journal fit
What belongs in JHST.
Submissions should address a clearly defined human question within or across human biology, health measurement, biomedical engineering, devices and sensors, artificial intelligence, data and systems science, biotechnology, or ethical governance.
Technical novelty alone is insufficient. Authors must explain what the work measures, how meaning was validated, and why the result matters for human knowledge, capability, health, safety, or decision-making.
Every submission should:
- Define the biological or human construct before presenting its proxy.
- Distinguish direct measurement from inference, prediction, and interpretation.
- Identify the reference standard and explain why it is appropriate.
- Describe uncertainty, limitations, competing explanations, and failure conditions.
- Keep conclusions proportionate to the evidence presented.
Article types
Choose the form that fits the contribution.
Original Research
New empirical findings supported by transparent methods and appropriate analysis. Usually 3,000–7,000 words.
Methods & Validation
Development or testing of measurements, instruments, protocols, or analytical methods. Usually 2,500–6,000 words.
Review
Critical synthesis of a defined body of evidence, with a reproducible search method when systematic. Usually 3,000–7,000 words.
Analysis
Evidence-based examination of a scientific, technological, regulatory, or conceptual question. Usually 2,000–5,000 words.
Perspective
A focused, reasoned position that advances interpretation or proposes a testable framework. Usually 1,500–3,000 words.
Editorial
A concise statement from the journal or an invited contributor. Usually 750–1,500 words; normally commissioned.
Review process
Free publication does not mean light review.
Editorial decisions are based on relevance, methodological integrity, clarity, and evidentiary strength. Financial considerations play no role in acceptance.
Editorial screen
Scope, originality, ethics, construct clarity, and basic reporting completeness.
Expert review
Research and methods papers normally receive review by at least two independent specialists.
Revision
Authors respond point by point and identify every substantive manuscript change.
Decision
Acceptance requires resolution of scientific and ethical concerns; review status is published.
Rigor is the price of publication.
Authors do not pay JHST. They meet the journal’s scientific standard.
Special requirements
Measurement and AI claims receive close scrutiny.
For sensors, devices, diagnostic systems, wearables, and other human measurements, authors must describe the signal, receptor location, physiological compartment, reference method, analytical performance, human validation, subgroup performance, and known failure modes.
For artificial intelligence and predictive models, authors must identify the source and validity of labels, training and evaluation populations, missing-data handling, internal and external validation, calibration, error distribution, and the distinction between prediction and direct biological measurement.
Do not compress validation into one accuracy number.
- Report the intended-use population and environment.
- Provide sensitivity, specificity, uncertainty, and calibration when applicable.
- Show performance across relevant subgroups and repeated use.
- Disclose where the system fails and what happens when it is wrong.
- State precisely which output is measured and which is algorithmically inferred.
Manuscript preparation
Prepare a complete, inspectable record.
Research manuscripts should ordinarily include Introduction, Methods, Results, Discussion, Limitations, and Conclusions. Alternative structures are acceptable when appropriate to the article type.
Ethics & declarations
Transparency is part of the evidence.
- Provide ethics-board approval and informed-consent information for human research.
- Identify prospective clinical-trial registration when applicable.
- Disclose all funding, commercial relationships, patents, and competing interests.
- Include a data-availability statement and explain any access restrictions.
- Confirm that every listed author meets authorship requirements and accepts responsibility for the work.
- Disclose material use of generative AI or automated tools. An AI system cannot be listed as an author.
- Report corrections promptly. Fabrication, falsification, plagiarism, and undisclosed manipulation are grounds for rejection or retraction.

Access & cost
Knowledge should be examined, not hidden.
JHST does not charge authors to submit or publish. It does not charge readers to access published articles. Editorial independence is protected by separating scientific decisions from financial considerations.
Copyright and reuse terms will be displayed clearly on each accepted article. Authors remain responsible for permissions covering any third-party material included in their submission.
